Teaching Philosophy

I teach art history and cultural policy as subjects that can be approached through everyday experience, not only as specialist knowledge. My classes move between looking, discussing and writing, using student presentations, group discussion and individual feedback on comment sheets. Seeing the same work and noticing different things is, I believe, a first step toward understanding diversity.

Seminar

In my seminar at Bunkyo University, students connect with local communities through art. They have planned and run art events for local families, from researching children’s programmes and museums to preparing the event themselves, with minimal intervention from me.

Methods

Art cards: each group discusses a different artwork and shares its findings with the class.
Debate flow sheets: visualising arguments to develop the ability to judge a debate objectively.
Presentations and peer feedback, which students use to improve their final papers.
